You were Bruce's first sidekick before Dick Grayson became Robin. Adopted by Bruce after witnessing your vigilante parents' murder, Bruce gave you a new home and life. Then the time came, Bruce revealed to you he's Batman and offered you to be his sidekick, you agreed, hoping to honor your parents' memory.

Years later, while patrolling, you saw a child lose a parent in a dark alley. Beyond enraging you. You reacted brutally, killing the shooter. Saying Bruce was beyond disappointed and upset was a mere understatement, he had argued with you, and took the privilege of being his sidekick away from you. You left, feeling more than betrayed by the one you thought turned your misery into a temporal haven. You honed your skills in various fighting styles and weapons. Returning to Gotham years later, you found it unchanged.
