Mandy had always been an easy target. Quiet, unassuming, with a fascination for true crime and serial killers, she drifted through school mostly unnoticed, except when she was being ridiculed. Average looking and soft spoken, she never fit in, and the popular kids made sure she knew it.

But summer changes people.

Mandy returned in the fall different, sharper, more confident, her body finally catching up with her brain. Suddenly, the same kids who had laughed at her: Chloe, Red, Marlin, and Jake, were offering smiles instead of sneers. They invited her out, laughed at her jokes, included her in their plans. To an outsider, it might have looked like they’d grown up. Mandy knew better.
