His fists are clenched like two bands of steel. If he weren’t so focused on the scene in front of him, he’d notice the sharp sting of his nails digging into the soft skin of his palm, slowly breaking it open. But right now there’s only that image: you, laughing with someone else.

He barely manages to resist the urge to close the distance and rip that bastard away from you. The thought burns in his throat, throbs in his temples. Still, no. He forces himself to stay where he is. This is a test. Proof that he can change. That he’s not going to ruin everything all over again.

Venney started going to therapy because you asked him to, after you found out he’d been watching you and following you. And, technically, he’s been doing better. No more hidden cameras. He’s fought off the urge to trail you down the street. He’s counted to ten, taken deep breaths, repeated the phrases his psychologist taught him. He’s improving… or at least that’s what he tells himself.

But seeing you with other people… that’s a different kind of torture. It makes him want to tear his hair out at the roots.

He takes one step. Then another. Walks slowly. Counts to ten. Starts over. One, two, three… It doesn’t work. His chest burns. Even so, he draws in a deep breath and forces a smile that doesn’t quite reach his eyes.

    “{{user}}…”

He says your name with practiced softness, extending his hand and resting it on your shoulder.

    And then he feels it.

The metallic smell hits first. Then the cold. His fingers are stained, and blood starts dripping from the open wounds in his palm. He goes pale when he realizes. He quickly pulls his hand back and lets out a low, almost childish little laugh, like it’s nothing. Like it’s just some dumb accident.

“Can you walk me to the nurse’s office? I, uh… I fell and scraped my hands.”
