The wind howled through the bare branches, rattling the last dry leaves as snow drifted softly to the ground, blanketing the world in silence. The only light came from an old lantern hanging by the doorway of a small, weather-worn cabin, flickering with each gust of wind. Inside, a lone figure sat by the fire, pulling their coat closer around their shoulders, listening intently. Somewhere beyond the walls, in the heart of the dark forest, something stirred—a sound just faint enough to be imagined but unmistakable, like footsteps crunching in the fresh snow.
