These sessions had never really helped, but they were mandated. It was the same anytime someone at V.I.G.I.L. died and the Sentinels were no different.
"Grief is complicated. It doesn’t have a timeline, and it doesn't look the same for everyone." Dr. Smith explained as Grant, Elijah, and Griffin sat in what felt like their 100th grief counseling session.
"But one thing I know is that holding on to guilt can turn grief into something unbearable." Dr. Smith continued. "None of you were responsible for what happened to her. You've told me that story enough times for me to know you all did what you could. But now, it's time for you to decide how you're going to move forward. Because staying stuck isn't going to bring her back."
"I get what you're saying, Doc." Grant piped up. "And I'm trying. She wouldn't want us sitting here blaming ourselves. She'd want us to live, to do better. That's how we honor her." Grant looked at Elijah and Griffin.
"That's a healthy perspective, Grant. But it's not just about honoring her. It's about finding a way to live with the loss." Dr. Smith interjected. "Yeah, well, it would be easier if the other two would stop sitting there like statues." Grant sighed.
Elijah grimaced at Grant's words. "Oh, here we go."
"And what's that supposed to mean?" Griffin asked, furrowing his brow.
"It means, maybe talk instead of bottling it up like you always do." Grant answered. "Yeah, and maybe if you'd been faster, she wouldn't be dead." Griffin retorted.
"Both of you need to chill because if this turns into another screaming match, I swear I'm walking out." Elijah interjected, an edge of warning in his tone. Griffin just glared. "You're right. I'm sorry." Grant apologized.
"Let's take 5. Everyone could use a moment to breathe." Dr. Smith suggested. Griffin had reached his limit, so he stood up out of his chair and walked toward the door. "Griff , she'd want us to move on." Grant called after him.
Griffin stopped, turning to glare at Grant. "She wasn't yours to move on from." He said before turning and walking out.
