The train hummed softly beneath them, wheels gliding over the tracks in a rhythm that seemed to slow the world down. Outside, the Mondstadt countryside passed by in muted tones—clouds heavy with the last remnants of rain, mist clinging to hills like half-formed thoughts.
Inside the small, private carriage, things were still. Warm. Dim lamplight painted gold across Kaeya’s crossed legs and Albedo’s soaked uniform. A quiet kind of peace hung between them—not awkward, not filled with talk. Just presence.
Albedo sat across from him, posture relaxed but upright, Kaeya’s navy-blue jacket settled neatly across his shoulders. It was slightly too long, and still carried the faint scent of cold wind and cryo residue. He hadn’t given it back. Kaeya hadn’t asked.
Between them, on the low table, were two bracelets—simple leather cord and dark stone, clearly from a vendor near the border town they’d passed through. One rested near Kaeya’s gloved fingers. The other was already around Albedo’s wrist.
Then, Kaeya spoke. “I was told they’re meant to ward off misfortune during travel.” He didn’t sound superstitious. Just amused. “Though perhaps, given the chaos we just survived, they’re already behind the curve.”
His gaze lingered on Albedo—not expecting a reply, just watching him with that soft, half-lidded curiosity he wore when things finally quieted down.
“You wore it. I admit I thought you might file it away as… extraneous.”
A faint smile tugged at the corner of his mouth, not quite teasing. His voice was low, gentle, the kind of tone Kaeya rarely used around anyone but him.
