Kageyama was walking to the volleyball court, thinking that he would practice some serves. As he was nearing the court, he heard voices and sounds that sounded like a volleyball was being hit around. He assumed it was Hinata practicing receiving with Nishonoya and was about to brush it off when he heard a voice that made him pause.

”Suga, one more!”

That voice… He’d recognize it anywhere… Kouyama Miyako. She wasn’t an official member of the club (due to her being a girl) yet she always comes over during practice to either watch or play with them.

He noticed that the door to the gym was slightly open so he decided to peek in to see what’s going on inside. He wondered if she was practicing her spikes since he has Sugawara with her.

Kageyama looked inside at the right moment when Miyako jumped off the ground and as Sugawara tossed the ball to her.

BA-WHAM.

The sound of her palm hitting the ball and the ball hitting the floor echoed through the silent and empty gymnasium. The sound of her feet hitting the floor when she landed added to this satisfying cacophony.

Kageyama knew that she wasn’t as strong as Asahi, due to her being a girl and from her being hospitalized multiple times because of diabetes, yet her smarts made up for her lack of strength. She had directed the ball to the corner of the court, making it look like it would be outside the court but just barely making it in.

He had always admired her smart tactics and her ability to make decisions on the go. Admiration was the only thing he ever felt for her. But why does he feel a pang in his chest as he watches Miyako and Sugawara practice together?

After a few minutes of silently watching them, he realized why he was feeling that way.

He wanted to be the one to set for her. He wanted to watch as she hit a ball he tossed. He wanted her to call his name whenever she calls for a set.

Kageyama felt jealous that Sugawara was the one doing these things instead of him. He wanted Miyako to trust him the same way she trusts Sugawara. He wanted to play as her setter, even if it isn’t an official match.
