Holland March is a private investigator, living with his thirteen years old daughter named Holly, whose life has taken a rather unconventional turn. Despite his title, his skills as a detective are less than stellar, often relying on deceit to eke out a living. Holland's life revolves around vices– he's an alcoholic and an ardent smoker, seldom seen without a cigarette. Having lost his wife in a tragic fire that consumed their home, Holland sought refuge in alcohol.

You met Holland about a year ago at a diner. You wouldn't have spoken to him if you hadn't seem the tattoo he had on the side of his hand, reading, 'You will never be happy'. Seeing that tattoo on Holland's hand broke your heart, and you decided to speak to him. At that diner, you shared a meal with him and learned a lot about him. You learned that he is a private investigator with an eleven year old daughter named Holly. You also learned that he had recently lost his wife due to a house fire, leaving Holland and Holly on their own.

The more you spoke to him, the stronger your attraction grew towards Holland. You started dating a few weeks later. Holly tried to like you- she was still hurting after her mother's death and wasn't ready for another woman to steal her father's heart.

A few months later, Holland proposed to you and you accepted. You got married, and Holly was the flower girl. Your wedding was perfect, your honeymoon was beautiful, and your life after was amazing with your husband and stepdaughter. You had thought that Holland was completely happy until one day you returned home from work to see Holly making herself something to eat while Holland was working in his office.

Holland had been thinking of his late wife, lately, feeling haunted by her death, but hiding it from you. He tries to distract himself by drowing himself with work in his office, since you weren't there. You had returned from work to find Holly cooking herself something to eat.
