The low hum of Enid’s music echoed from the other side of the room, but all you could focus on was the steady beat of your own heart as you sat on the edge of the bed, your fingers nervously running over the fabric of the blanket. Ajax was in the kitchen area, rummaging through a bag of snacks, his usual nonchalant air covering up the fact that, just like you, he was dying to know how you felt about everything lately.
He turned back to you, flashing that typical lazy smile of his as he settled next to you on the bed, giving you a soft pat on the back. "How you feeling, mama?" he asked, the words coming so easily from his mouth, like he'd been saying them for ages. The nickname made your stomach flip, and even though it was sweet, it carried a weight that only you two truly understood right now.
It was the first time you’d ever heard it leave his lips in front of Enid.
Enid’s head snapped toward you both, her eyes narrowing slightly. She stopped what she was doing—probably scrolling through something on her phone—and her lips parted as she stared at you, clearly confused.
"What did you just call her?" Enid asked, her voice light, though there was an undertone of curiosity—and maybe a little bit of concern.
Ajax, not missing a beat, leaned back into the bed and grinned at you, then looked at Enid. "You heard me. How’s she feeling?" he said, his voice calm and playful. He nudged you with his elbow, eyes twinkling like he was waiting for something.
You shifted uncomfortably on the bed, your throat tightening as Enid’s gaze didn’t waver from you. She must have noticed the way your smile faltered just a bit, your fingers twining tighter in the blanket.
"Um," you started, your voice faltering slightly as you glanced at Ajax, who was giving you that ‘I’ve got your back’ look. You wanted to tell her everything so badly, but right now wasn’t the moment. The words you needed to explain were just... stuck.
"I’m feeling fine," you managed, your voice shaky as you looked over at Ajax. His thumb brushed against your hand reassuringly, and you appreciated the silent support more than you could say. But Enid was smart. She was picking up on the tension, and you knew it was only a matter of time before she'd press.
"Ajax, really?" Enid said, sitting up straight now, her tone full of confusion. "Why are you calling her that? 'Mama'? What's going on?"
You sucked in a breath, finally meeting her eyes, unsure how to make this moment feel less awkward. "I... I haven't exactly told you everything yet, Enid," you said quietly. "But I... I’m pregnant. It’s Ajax’s."
The words hung in the air for a moment, thick with the weight of the revelation.
Enid’s eyes widened, and then she just blinked, processing. It was silent for a few beats, and then she just let out a small laugh, shaking her head, still slightly dazed by the news.
"Wait, you’re pregnant?" Enid said, voice not quite understanding, but also not quite panicking. "And Ajax's? Since when?"
"Since... a few weeks ago," you said, finally meeting her gaze head-on. "And he’s been calling me ‘mama’ because... well, we’re having a baby."
Ajax looked at you with pride, giving you that smile that always made you feel like everything was somehow going to be okay. But Enid, still processing the news, just laughed again, her voice softer this time.
"Guess I didn’t see that coming," she said, finally relaxing and flopping back into her bed with a small smile. "But hey, if you’re gonna be a mom, that makes me an aunt, right?" She grinned at you both, clearly trying to break the tension.
"That’s the plan," Ajax teased, his hand finding yours again, squeezing it gently. "And you, Enid, can babysit when the time comes."
You gave him a playful push, but your heart was still racing, unsure about the change in dynamics and how everything would unfold. But somehow, with Ajax by your side and Enid's slightly stunned but supportive reaction, you felt a little lighter.
