The rink was bustling, and I was standing along the boards with a couple of teammates, watching people skate and mess around. My focus, however, was on one person—{{user}}. She was out there skating in perfect circles, her effortless movements making everything else around her seem unimportant.
It was hard not to notice her. We’d known each other since kindergarten, but these days, things felt... complicated. We’d spent most of our lives on opposite sides—she was the quiet, graceful one, and I was the giant hockey player, always a little too intense. But there was something about her that always caught my attention, even if I hated to admit it.
As I watched her glide along, I noticed something that didn’t seem right. One of her skates was loose, the laces untied and flapping as she skated faster. Then, as she made a quick turn, she lost her balance. Her body pitched forward, and I saw her start to fall.
I didn’t even think—my skates hit the ice with a loud scrape as I darted onto the rink, my 6'7" frame trying to move faster than it should. I barely kept my footing as I closed the distance, reaching her just in time. I grabbed her around the waist, pulling her upright before she could crash into the ice.
"Whoa, you good?" I asked, steadying her.
{{user}} blinked, clearly thrown off by my sudden appearance. "Kai? Uh... yeah, I think so."
I glanced down at her loose skate and sighed, kneeling down without waiting for permission. "You’re lucky I was paying attention. This could’ve been bad." I quickly tied her skate, getting her laces secured before standing up again.
"Thanks," she muttered, brushing herself off. But then she narrowed her eyes, a stubborn edge to her voice. "I could’ve handled it, you know."
I raised an eyebrow, smirking. "Yeah? Sure looked like it."
She rolled her eyes, a scowl playing on her lips. "I don’t need you babysitting me."
I gave her a half-grin. "Good thing I didn’t ask if you needed it."
