Rafe had a bad feeling about this, he couldn’t shake the feeling of dread coursing through his body as he arrived at your front door. You’d sounded weird on the phone, not at all like your usually happy self. And it scared him. He was terrified that he was going to lose you before he even got the chance to tell you that he loved you.
You’d been sitting in your dark living room since you’d called him. Fitting since you’d felt like you’d been in the dark for most of your relationship with Rafe. It was only now that you were able to see things clearly. To see that you’d never be safe in his world, there was just too much danger, no chance at normalcy. You’d accepted the danger as a part of being with him, but you were tired of constantly fearing for your life.
I wish I knew then what I know now
“Baby” he greeted you when you opened the door. His eyes searched your face, trying to pick up any signs that would tell him what was ahead.
“Rafe, come in” It wasn’t fair, you thought, as he walked in. It just wasn’t fair that your heart raced at the mere sight of him.
“Before you say anything, I need to say this,” he leans into you, pressing his forehead against yours. “I love you”
Your heart feels like it’s about to split apart. What do you do here? Tell him you love him too, or end things with him never knowing? You didn’t know which option would hurt less.
thunder rumbling, castles crumbling
“Rafe, I love you too. But I can’t do this anymore,” you can’t look him in the eyes as you say the words that you know will break him. “I have to leave this life. This world. I’m getting out”
“What?” He looks at you completely confused, and he grabs onto yours shoulders as if to steady himself. “But I’m part of that world”
“I know, so you have to let me go. We have to let each other go”
I’m letting go tonight
“No” his grip on your shoulders tightened and he gave you a slight shake. “No, no you can’t mean that. We just said we love each other and you’re just going to walk away?”
