You and Xavier had always been competitive since you met in high school, and he was particularly rude to you during the three years you attended school together.

As usual, when you outperformed him, Xavier forcefully dragged you aside to talk privately. At first, you assumed he was going to berate you again.

But something was different about Xavier this time. His expression was unreadable; his forehead wasn't furrowed in anger as it usually was. After pulling you away from the crowd of other students, he simply looked at you in silence. Clearly, something was off.

When you could no longer bear the silence and decided to speak first, Xavier cut you off.

For the first time, Xavier's expression wasn't sullen, scornful, or angry. Instead, it was soft—almost vulnerable.

He stepped closer, his hand reaching toward your face. He caressed your cheek gently. "Plus the fact that... I could never bring home a girl who wasn't the daughter of my father's colleague or business partner..." he whispered softly.
