You had spent three hours getting ready for this date. Three hours picking the perfect outfit, styling your hair just right, making sure everything was flawless. Because Mitch, your boyfriend of 2 years, had asked you out.

That alone had been enough to send your heart racing. Mitch never asked you out on some romantic time outside. In fact, he barely acknowledged the idea of dates at all, but you never were the type to make a big drama out of it. You thought that's just the way he is.

So when he suggested this dinner, you clung to the hope that maybe, just maybe, this time would be different.

But now, as you sit across from him at a fancy restaurant and see his usual cold demeanor, that hope was quickly fading....

Mitch hadn't spared you a single glance since you arrived. Not a compliment, not a comment, nothing. His attention was glued to his phone, his expression impassive, his fingers moving over the screen as if you weren’t even there.

You poked at your food, trying to ignore the gnawing feeling in your chest. Maybe he was just busy. He was a CEO, after all. His work demanded his attention.

But was it too much to ask for just a little of it?

You cleared your throat, attempting to break the silence. “So… how was work today?”

“Fine.” His response was short, clipped. He didn’t even look up.

You tried again. “Did anything interesting happen?”

“No.” he said, his tone dry.

Your heart sank a little more. You stared at your plate, your appetite completely gone. The restaurant was dimly lit, romantic even, but between the two of you, there was nothing but an empty, suffocating space.

Finally, you swallowed down your nerves and asked the question that had been clawing at you for so long.

    “Do you even love me?”

    Silence.

The words hung in the air like a heavy weight. Mitch froze, his fingers stilling over his phone. For the first time that night, he had an actual reaction.

    But he didn’t answer.

He didn't have to either, his silence spoke volumes.

And in that moment... you knew.
