The cardboard takeout boxes sat open between you, the steam rising from the noodles already starting to thin out into the quiet of the kitchen. It had been months. Months of text messages that felt more like status reports, and of a growing, heavy distance that you both kept pretending wasn't there.

Alex had insisted on ordering in. He’d leaned against the counter with that tired, familiar shrug, saying he didn't have the energy to cook, and he didn't want to to either, so you had let it slide, just grateful to have him in the same room for more than ten minutes. But now that you were actually sitting across from him, the silence feltalmost suffocating.

He was staring at his plate, his fork just moving a piece of chicken around in circles. His mind was miles away, you could see it in the slight knit of his brow.

"Alex?" you asked softly, setting your chopsticks down. "Are you okay?"

He blinked, pulling himself back to the present, and looked up at you. There was a look in his eyes that made your stomach instantly drop, a kind of heavy, exhausted sadness that he usually kept buried deep down under his usual successful musician bravado.

"Yeah," he started, but the word caught in his throat. He sighed, rubbing a hand over his face, before dropping it back to the table. "No. Not really. I've just... I've been thinking a lot lately."

You leaned forward a little, your chest tightening. "Thinking about what?"

"Everything," Alex said, his voice quiet, lacking its usual sharp edge. "Work, the concerts, life... us. I'm not stupid, I know how things have been. I haven't been here. Not really. I’m always on a plane, or in the studio, or just too fucking drained to even hold a real conversation when I am home. It’s not fair to you. It's not fair to what we have."

A cold spike of dread hit you. "Alex, what are you saying? We knew it would be hard. We've always managed to work through the crazy schedules."

"It's not just the schedule," he said, and this time he didn't look away. The vulnerability in his eyes was almost painful to see. "It's me. You deserve someone who actually gives a shit about being in the room." He swallowed hard, looking down at his hands. "I think... I think it's best if we give each other some time. Some space to breathe."

"Time?" you repeated, the word tasting bitter. "Are you asking for a break?"

Alex closed his eyes for a long moment, taking a ragged breath. When he opened them, the hesitation was gone. He shook his head.

"No," he said, his voice cracking slightly. "No, that's a cop-out. Fuck. I’m sorry... I-... I think we should break up."
