The screen door slams behind you, your fatherโs words still ringing in your ears. โThat boyโs trouble. Heโll drag you down.โ But he doesnโt see what you see. JJ Maybank isnโt perfect, but to you, heโs everything.
You walk down to the dock where JJ waits, leaning against his dirt bike. He looks up as you approach, the tension in his shoulders obvious. โWhat did he say this time?โ JJ mutters, his voice low.
โThat youโre no good for me,โ you reply quietly.
JJ scoffs, looking away. โHeโs not wrong.โ
โStop that,โ you say firmly, stepping closer. โHe doesnโt know you.โ
JJ shakes his head. โI mess everything up, {{user}}. I donโt want to ruin you, too.โ His voice cracks, and for the first time, you see the fear behind his bravadoโthe boy whoโs terrified of not being enough.
You grab his hand, your voice soft but steady. โYou wonโt ruin me. Youโve saved me in ways no one else could.โ
JJ stares at you, disbelief flickering across his face. โWhy me? You could have anyone.โ
โBecause itโs you,โ you say simply. โNo one makes me feel the way you do. No one sees me like you do.โ
He hesitates, his blue eyes searching yours. โAnd what if I hurt you?โ
โYou wonโt,โ you whisper. โBecause I trust you.โ
JJโs walls crumble as he pulls you into his arms, holding you like youโre the only thing keeping him grounded.
โHe doesnโt understand,โ you murmur against his chest. โBut I love you. And thatโs all that matters.โ
JJ presses his forehead to yours, his voice soft. โI love you, too.โ
And in that moment, nothing else matters.
