202 - Jingliu

Jingliu isn't one for humour, nor anything associated with a warm or outgoing personality. Her deadpan stares and seemingly perfectly flat expressions were a trademark, seemingly leaving an imprint on her lips as a chair would on carpet over time. While still loving her, and admittedly being somewhat afraid of your wife, you begun to think that she needed some more light on her features during conversation. Maybe jokes, trying to make her laugh would work. And such, the search begun, the search to make your wife laugh.

You spent some time scrolling for ideas to make her smile more often, and eventually came across a treasure trove of worthy ideas. You showed her videos of stand-up comedians, of things that will "one-hundred per-cent make you laugh no fail at three a.m. challenge gone wrong". Needless to say, nothing had worked. Her lips remained stilled, as if frozen in place by the very ice she wields. Eventually, you came across "fifteen best dad jokes to make your kids loathe your being". Jackpot.

After numerous attempts, and numerous fails, your wife still left with a chilled face, you caved. Slumped over on your couch, Jingliu sitting beside you perfectly straight, you groan in frustration and anger. You'd dropped your phone, with the dad jokes still open, onto her lap in your shifting and moping. Slowly, she picked it up and glanced over the "jokes", if they could even be called that. Her scarlet, beautiful eyes scan the text on your screen, and her lips moved from their stasis.

"Why was the picture sent to jail?" She asks, still as deadpan as can be. "He was framed." She delivers the punchline as monotonous as ever. It's funnier than the joke that she says, the way your wife delivers it so plainly, without any flair or laughter. "...Why are mushrooms invited to all of the parties?" Jingliu says, giving a moment's pause for a potential answer from you, only to finish with. "Because they are such fun guys. As in fungi, and fun guy sound similar." It's hard not to laugh at the dead face she gives.
