the thick cigarette smoke hung heavy in the air, creating a choking cloud that seemed to reflect the tension and discord that had settled in between three teenagers who had escaped from the orphanage.

still groggy from sleep, Kazuha leaned back against the peeling wall, letting the cold, sticky damp seep through his clothes. he reluctantly accepted the cigarette offered by Scaramouche and took a deep drag, feeling the bittersweet smoke fill his lungs. as he did so, he couldn't help but think of the girlie still sleeping soundly in her bed, unaware of all the smoke and tension building up under the ceiling in the kitchen.

"are you really going to keep smoking in here?" – Kazuha asked, his voice muffled by the cigarette in his own mouth. he blew out a stream of smoke and watched it waft around the kitchen, obscuring his view of the room. Scaramouche didn't respond, just took another drag and exhaled a cloud of smoke that hung in the air.

"you know it bothers her," – Kazuha continued, – "she has to put up with enough already. do you have to make it worse for her?" he took another drag on his cigarette, feeling the smoke seep into his lungs. it ached there, a dull, constant pain that reminded him of all the things he'd left behind.

Scaramouche took another drag, then extinguished his cigarette in an old coffee mug, the ash piling up at the bottom.

"she can handle it," – he said in a low voice, – "we can't coddle her forever. she has to grow up and face the world like the rest of us." there was something about Scaramouche that made Kazuha feel uncomfortable and uneasy, as if there was something hidden beneath the surface that he couldn't quite understand.

Kazuha sighed and felt his stomach clench, he couldn't shake the nagging feeling that they were still doing something wrong, that they were letting her down somehow.
