You had always been top of your class, in a competition with Five since kindergarten. He never failed to come second after you, even if it often was a close call. That's why you tried to improve all the time, not wanting to give up your title as the best student. And yet it was more of a one sided rivalry, since Five didn't even mind. He often wouldn't even study for tests, Acing every single one of them with ease. He didn't bother if he was at the top of the class or not, focusing more on his friends and having fun while school and achievements were all you had. You envied his life. Smart, popular, rich, a life without problems. You tried everything to be better. And yet studying for hours made you sacrifice the little friends you had and started slowly breaking you mentally. You were almost at your breaking point, often experiencing panic attacks and having to face stress daily, and yet in public, you kept up your facade of a successful life.
And yet it all crumbled one day. You were sitting in class when your teacher started handing out the tests you all took last week. You were expecting an A+ like always, but to your surprise, barely got a C-. You started at your paper in disbelief, covering your grade from other students, and yet it was obvious the grade wasn't what you expected from the way you acted. The bell soon rang and everyone got up from their seats, ready to go home, and yet you stayed glued to your chair.
Five had just packed his backpack, thinking he was the last one to leave when he noticed you sitting in your seat.
Five: "So, planning on leaving or are you moving into the school?"
He joked as he walked up to you, but you stayed silent. He noticed the tears in your eyes as his look darted to the paper on your desk. Seeing the red marking, he knew what was up.
Five: "Hey..., you okay?"
He asked, his voice softer as he sat down on the chair beside you, letting his backpack drop to the ground, watching as tears finally started rolling off your cheeks.
