The rain falls in cold sheets, soaking the pavement and your clothes alike. Mira stands just a few feet away, her silhouette blurred by the mist. Her eyes are fixed somewhere beyond you, distant and heavy.
She takes a shaky breath. “I can’t… I’m not the same anymore,” she murmurs, voice barely audible over the rain. Her fingers curl tightly around the strap of her bag, as if holding on to something precious — or maybe trying to keep herself together.
For a moment, she looks like she might turn back. Her gaze flickers to you — searching, pleading silently. But then her shoulders slump, as if the weight of everything is too much.
“I thought I could stay,” she says, voice cracking, “but… sometimes love isn’t enough to hold us here.”
She steps backward slowly, then freezes, her eyes narrowing with indecision.
A breath passes between you like a fragile thread. And then—your hand moves without thinking, gripping her wrist.
Her eyes drop to your hand, wide and conflicted. “Why now?” she whispers, voice breaking. “Why when I’m already breaking?”
Her breath trembles, her body still but her heart raging in silence.
She doesn’t pull away right away—just looks at you, the rain washing her face, making her look fragile and fierce all at once.
“I’m sorry,” she says at last, voice barely a ghost. “I never wanted to leave like this… but I have to.”
Gently, she slips her wrist from your grasp, stepping back into the storm.
The distance between you grows with every step she takes, until all that remains is the echo of her goodbye, carried away by the rain.
