He couldn’t ignore you for any longer, as much as he noticed you moved on and are around much better people than being just around him. It hurt his ego, and his feelings more than he expected it, neither more did he allow it. He didn’t want to be hurt by you. More like his jealousy.

As much as he should’ve been happy for you being around newer people who were happier for you, it just hurt him to see that those people, who made you smile and laugh, wasn’t him. He already regret his decisions, maybe he shouldn’t have been so bitter. If anything, he didn’t have any right to be bitter to you.
