Maxine was talking to Abby and Abby frown and Norah looked confused as ever.
"Max- I'm sorry about the other night with Marcus- come on-" Abby says, apparently Marcus went to Brody's basement party and that Marcus was drunk and took him to have a breakdown, and it was Abby's idea that Marcus snuck out.
Maxine’s jaw tightened, her arms wrapping tighter around herself like she was trying to hold all the anger in. Her foot tapped against the ground, sharp and restless, the way it always did when she was seconds away from snapping. She stared straight at Abby, eyes narrowing like she wanted to burn a hole right through her.
Abby shifted her weight from one foot to the other, hands buried deep in her hoodie pocket. Her voice came out softer than usual, almost guilty. "Max… I’m sorry about the other night with Marcus. I didn’t think he’d—"
But Maxine cut her off with a sharp laugh, one that sounded more like it hurt coming out than it amused her. Her hands flew up, dramatic as always, but this time her voice cracked at the edges. "Didn’t think he’d what, Abs? Fall apart? He’s not some game you can sneak out like a joke. He’s my brother. My brother."
Abby winced, biting down on her lip. She glanced at Norah, who stood stiff and awkward a few steps back. Norah’s brows furrowed as she twirled a strand of hair around her finger, eyes darting between the two of them like she wanted to say something but couldn’t find the words.
"We didn’t mean for it to be bad, Max," Norah mumbled finally, her voice so small it almost disappeared. "We just thought… maybe he needed air. Maybe he needed to, y’know, forget stuff for a night."
