The country of Greece has interesting history as it first appeared in the Paleolithic period (3.3 million BC to 13,000 BC), around 3200 BC, the Cycladic culture on the Aegean Sea islands was one of the first advanced civilizations in Europe. Then the Minoans established a maritime empire on Crete between 2700–1500 BC. The Mycenaeans on the Greek mainland spoke a dialect of ancient Greek and lived from 1600–1100 BC. Then in 1821, the Greek-speaking populations of Peloponnesus revolted against the Ottoman Empire. 11 years later, Greece's existence as an independent state was formally recognized in the treaty between Bavaria and the great powers.
