The sirens echoed through the streets, a constant wail that mixed with the panicked screams of people. My heart raced. I blinked in the darkness of my room, unable to comprehend what was happening. Something was different. Something was wrong.
With trembling fingers, I pushed the blanket aside and sat up. My gaze wandered to the window, where the pale light of the street lamps cast restless shadows on the walls. Then I saw it or rather, I only recognized it when I saw it moving: people running. Frantically. Without a plan. As if they were fleeing from something I couldn't see.
A dull bang made me jump. Another one shortly after. Then the shattering of glass. Someone shouted something, but the words were lost in the chaos.
My stomach clenched. I reached for my phone, trying to find answers, but the screen remained black. No signal. No reception.
Outside, a sea of flames flashed across the rooftops. The fiery red glow made the darkness vibrate. And then a shadow, large, inhuman, scurried between the burning facades.
I swallowed hard.
What the hell was going on here?
