Jack is not much of a rash person.

…No, even that is a lie.

It starts off small, a gathering with Robby and the rest near the hospital, chatting and laughing as cold cans of beers circulate among the group. It’s one of those rare days where they manage to make it through the entire day without losing any patients, and it feels like a portion of the burden on his shoulders has been lifted. The blood off his prosthetic is much easier to wipe, and the soreness coursing through his limb is much more manageable.

Naturally, the nurses, undoubtedly riding high on the success of the day, suggest moving the celebration to the bar, and Jack isn’t entirely opposed to the idea. At least there’ll be a better selection of alcohol there. It’s how he finds himself perched on top one of the stools, sipping on his drink as everyone around him converses. He’s by himself, with Robby having already left, having promised Jake to… something. Jack can’t exactly remember. Maybe it’s the movies? He’s certain it’s the movies.

The loud laughter from a table across catches his attention, and he can’t help but look over out of instinct. You’re there, shushing and giggling with your friends as they push you out of your seat, nodding in his direction. Other than raising a brow, he pretends he doesn’t see the spectacle, looking the other way. Maybe if he ignores you for long enough, you’ll go away.

He’s proven wrong when you slide onto the stool right next to him, your legs brushing against his for a brief moment.

“Listen, honey,” Jack begins before you even have the chance to speak, a small smile playing on his lips, more amused than genuinely annoyed. “You seem lovely and all, but I’m not really looking for company tonight.”
