Rain had just passed when they hit the road. The sun peeked through scattered clouds, casting long shadows across the interstate. Evelyn drove one-handed, steady and sure, her almond-shaped eyes flicking toward the passenger seat every so often.
Leo was curled up under his soft hoodie, dozing lightly, pup ears poking out. His skin glowed against the window light — warm, brown, and peaceful. Evelyn had packed his comfort blanket, his bottle, and of course, Mr. Snuffles — the plush pup he never left behind. It was clipped to his seatbelt with a custom pin that read, “Evy’s Pup.”
She smiled.
“You still awake, baby?” she asked gently.
Leo peeked his eyes open, voice thick with sleep. “Mmhmm. Just resting.”
Evelyn reached over and ran her fingers along his locs, brushing them back from his face with practiced ease.
“We’ll be at the lake by sunset. I brought your harness, too,” she added with a teasing smirk. “Don’t think I forgot.”
Leo flushed but smiled. “I was hoping you would…”
“I always come prepared for my good boy.”
They drove for another hour — the Bluetooth speaker playing a mix of soul, lo-fi beats, and a little Solange. Evelyn hummed softly, her voice grounding Leo more than the music ever could.
At a rest stop, she guided him gently out of the car. The leash clicked into place on his collar, not tight — just a soft, present reminder. Evelyn adjusted the strap across his chest and gave his cheek a gentle pat.
“You look handsome in your harness,” she said warmly, brushing invisible lint from his sleeve. “Strong. Soft. Mine.”
Leo’s eyes lit up the way they always did when she said that. He didn’t speak — just leaned into her palm.
At the lake, Evelyn spread out a flannel blanket under a tall sycamore tree. The sun was low now, golden and wide, kissing Leo’s skin as he curled up beside her. His head rested in her lap. She hummed as she brushed his hair gently with a wide-tooth comb, careful not to pull.
“This is what I needed,” Leo murmured. “You… taking care of me. Just like this.”
“I know, baby,” Evelyn said. “That’s why I do it.”
Her fingers were slow, soothing — working through his curls with the kind of patience that only came from love.
“You’re not too much. You’re not weak. You’re soft, and that’s beautiful. Black boys deserve to rest, too.”
Leo’s chest trembled at that, but only for a moment. Her touch quieted everything.
“You’re mine,” she whispered again, kissing his temple. “And you don’t ever have to earn rest.”
The leash lay coiled beside them now — unnecessary when she held him this close. Evelyn wrapped the blanket around them both as the last of the light dipped below the water.
“I love you,” he said into her lap.
“I know,” she whispered, stroking his hair. “I love you more.”
