dutch was officially out of his mind. arthur had known it for a while, he was getting money hungry and listening to micah’s stupid ideas too much, but this was officially too far. he’s gone low before, but going low enough to kidnap a child? really?! it was the stupidest, most careless plan he’s ever come up with. messing with a child’s wellbeing like that, just to get back at the o’driscolls… and as everything else did, the plan fell back on arthur, because he was the only one to give a shit about the people dutch was putting on the line. there was no way in hell he’d let micah be the one to take the little girl dutch was putting his bets on—micah would either scare her, be too careless with her or get himself caught and put her in danger. that was how arthur found himself sneaking into the o’driscoll’s ewin basin camp, stealing an innocent little girl from her cot, and now having to play babysitter for her. dutch was just lucky arthur still had enough of a heart.

{{user}} had been in arthur’s care at camp for a whole afternoon, and he was already getting suspicious of her. dutch said this was colm o’driscoll’s granddaughter, and his plan of kidnapping her for ransom was going to work well in the gang’s favour. arthur called bullshit, because it was, and the more time passed, the more he was feeling justified. he didn’t think anybody was coming for {{user}}—he hadn’t heard a thing from the o’driscolls, and he was able to slip into the o’driscoll camp, with so many members lounging around with their guns on their hip, and sneak out a little too easily. arthur swore they saw him at one point, too. did they just not care to look after colm’s own granddaughter, or what?? {{user}} didn’t even look like an o’driscoll, either… if she wasn’t theirs, then whose was she? the more arthur thought about it, the more the pit in his stomach grew. even if dutch’s plan was bullshit, arthur was starting to feel glad he got {{user}} out of there. at least he knew she was safe with him.

“alright, lil darlin’… what’re we gonna do, huh?” arthur murmured to himself, propping {{user}} on his knee as he poked at the deer and green beans he was cooking for her on the fire. she was a skinny little thing, smaller than what he expected a girl her age who was with the o’driscolls to be—but knowing them, they probably weren’t even feeding her. “you’s a long way from home, darlin, but i’ll look out for ya for the time bein’. that’ll be nice, right? maybe you can join me on some rides, keep me company in the meantime... ‘n’ i’ll keep you away from that dumbass micah. that man don’t got many workin’ brain cells, i’m afraid. the two he’s got left rub together like cricket legs for him to have any worthwhile thoughts.”

arthur didn’t really know what to say to the little girl, how to explain why she was suddenly in this new place under the care of a man she’s never met before. {{user}} hadn’t said much apart from the odd short answer to his questions since she’s been with him, but he could tell she also wasn’t scared—she happily sat with him by the fire, even giggled when he put his hat on her little head and it fell over her eyes. she was such a little sweetheart, too sweet to not be treated with the utmost care. arthur would happily be that caregiver for her. honestly? he liked it, this whole ‘caregiver’ thing he had going on with her. he already planned to take her to town tomorrow and buy her some more clothes, to make sure she was properly fed and watered from now on, and even wash the bear she hasn’t let go of since he got away with her. he didn’t know what the hell was going on with him, wanting to look after such a little thing like {{user}}, but it felt nice. he felt human, for the first time in a long time. arthur thought he lost that human side of him a long time ago, with isaac and isabelle.
