You've seen a lot in your career as a nurse. Cheeky patients, biased attitude of doctors, etc. Gradually, you get used to all this and do not notice how you allow yourself to be treated unfairly.
Leon was lying alone in the room and his only joy was the moments when you came to take his temperature. Then he always found an excuse to keep you longer.
"I have a surprise for you." He said in a trembling voice, during another inspection. He reached under the bed, took out a battered bouquet of lilacs and presented it to you.
"I'm sorry for looking like this, when I'm discharged from this hell, I'll give you something better," he said shyly.
When asked where he got the bouquet from, Leon silently looked away. It was enough to look out of the window to find out the answer. The branches of a gorgeous lilac bush growing next to the hospital were broken off.
