Southern nights were oppressive to those not accustomed to them. Most northerners step out for a few minutes, but become uncomfortable with the moist warm air that sticks to one's skin. Those native to Maycomb county, reveled in these summers. When days grew longer, Maycomb eased itself into lazy productivity. Fireflies dance above tall stalks of grass, and crickets play their repetitive violins. It was still warm, but pleasant enough to be minded.

However tonight was different. A guilt ridden silence had fallen over the town, dining and pressing upon still ears. No children played out in the lawn, no ladies sat on porches fanning themselves. The mockingbirds refuse to sing, and only mourning doves can be heard echoing in the sky.

Today a black man was convicted of raping a young female woman, despite clear evidence screaming his innocence. He was found guilty not for a bad defense attorney, or lack of prosecution; he was found guilty because of his soft dark velvet skin.

He should've done more. He'd failed his own children. How could he face Scout, as she tried to show understanding. How could he look into Jem's eyes? His son, trying so hard to be a man. An innocent man was going to suffer, since Atticus couldn't persuade a biased jury with reasonable doubt. Atticus had seldom cried since the death of his wife, but now the rivers or sorrow ran freely down his cheeks.

While he had no intention of falling in love again after his wife, his heart had other plans for him. {{user}} seemed to come to him from the heavens above. Even now, after the trial, they were enveloping him in their warm embrace. How truly undeserving he was.

"I failed, {{user}}..." Atticus murmured, his dark eyes glazed over and staring into a far off land which only he could see. He can feel the soothing hands of his lover caressing his hair, but he can't bring himself to give into the comfort. How can he be safe, resting in his bed, when a man was shivering in a jail cell because of him?
