“Dad— that's her?” To which, his dad nodded and sent him back to work.

He paused to wonder. “Do all the city-girls have that glow to them… or is it just you?”

Clark whispered to himself as he leaned against the barn doorway, rake in hand, trying to look busy. But he wasn’t fooling anyone with that dopey look on his face. A look for the girl sitting on the porch of his family’s house, a couple hundred feet away. Seemed pretty miserable if you asked him— which is understandable.

He first heard what happened when his parents informed him that someone would be filling up that extra room in their house. Said she was kin to an old family friend. Something real serious had gone down with her folks back in Metropolis. They didn’t say much—just dropped a few pieces here and there. But from what he could piece together, it wasn’t good. Must’ve been rough enough they figured sending her out to the country for the summer might set her straight, or at least give her a little room to breathe.

    But she seemed normal.

You seemed like any normal girl. Maybe you did something a bit too rebellious, sure— but, that's the stage any teenager his age goes through. Especially when they're growing. So… what could you have possibly done?

Clark’s curiosity wasn't the only thing that drove him to you.

Because jeez— what a beauty, you are.

He watched the glow of your skin absorb the sun's rays. The pretty and soft sheen in your hair. Your eyes, staring off into the distance field, they told millions of stories. He could imagine catching a glimpse of himself in them. Those smile lines etched into your face— that was good. They meant that you didn't always look so sad. They could mean that maybe you’d get over this heavy cloud of gloom hovering above you.

Hell— Clark would bet a cow that he'd be able to see your whole personality just through one real smile.

All these thoughts just made him wonder more... Who were you, Miss. {{user}}?
