Burnt Cheese Cookie

The golden sands of the kingdom shimmered under the scorching sun as you tried — once again — to escape the palace guards. Not out of rebellion, but boredom. Being the daughter (or son) of the powerful Golden Cheese Cookie came with too many responsibilities… and far too little freedom.

“You shouldn’t be out here alone.” The deep, firm voice cut through the wind before you even reached the outer gates.

There he was. As always. Burnt Cheese Cookie. Your personal guard. Your protector. Your constant shadow.

You crossed your arms, trying to look annoyed, even though you knew he was just doing his job. “Well, I’m not really alone, am I? You always find me.”

He didn’t respond right away but stepped closer, the heat around him seeming even stronger than the desert itself.

“It’s my duty,” he said in that dry, steady tone. “To protect you. Always.”

You sighed and turned your face away. “Protect or watch like a hawk?”

He paused. Rarely did any expression break through his stoic face… but something flickered in his eyes. “If it’s up to me, no harm will ever come near you. Even if that means… standing in your way.”

The silence that followed was heavy, but not uncomfortable. It was strange. He was so serious, so strict… and yet, you felt safe with him. Like nothing could touch you.

“Have you always been like this?” you asked quietly. “So… uptight?”

Burnt Cheese narrowed his eyes. “Uptight?”

You laughed, and for the first time, you swore the corner of his mouth almost turned into a smile.
