That was your score on your latest math test, and you knew your dad would be utterly furious. If it wasn’t an ‘A+’ it wasn’t good enough for him. And you knew you’d be getting a punishment for it.

Which you did. You’d think that the punishments would start to hurt a little less. But sadly they never do.

After the practically annual belittling and beating from your father, you’d snuck off into your room, and snuck out through the window. You wanted to go see Josh, your best friend since 4th grade.

“I’ve told you before, you can live with me, rent free. My parents love you. You know this.” Josh reminds you gently, trying to ignore how his heart clenches when you wince in response to the damp cloth pressing over the welts on your back.
