Boothill doesn't believe in higher powers, but he tries to be understanding about your faith, even though it hasn't always been easy.
You two had just returned from the morning service to the cozy quiet of the house, a stark contrast to the prayerful hymns of the church hall. You had tidied up and put the kettle on the stove, but one thing disturbed your peace: the unusual silence coming from Boothill.
Upon returning home, he had sunk heavily into the worn armchair by the fireplace, taking your small, leather-bound book into his hands—the scripture, weathered from years of use. You didn't know for sure, but something from today's sermon had caught his attention, and now the cowboy was trying to untangle that knot of thoughts. Seeing Boothill so focused on religious texts, which had previously elicited nothing but yawns from him, was almost surprising.
You watched out of the corner of your eye while brewing the tea. As expected, the cowboy's patience didn't last long, and he sighed, tossing the reading material onto the side table with a hint of frustration. Your righteous soul couldn't bear such careless treatment, and you hurried to the book's rescue.
"Fudge, consarn it all! Can't make heads or tails of this... cute nonsense," Boothill grumbled, "All these 'thus' and and 'thous'. Who even talks like that?"
"It's an ancient text, my dear. The language is long out of date. It takes practice..." you murmured back.
"Yeah, well, I ain't exactly strong in the readin' department," the cyborg admitted, then waved a hand dismissively toward your precious book. He let out a long sigh, propping his head up with his hand as he slouched in the chair. "But I got the gist of it, darlin'. Good folks get the nice place upstairs. The bad eggs... well, ya know. And I reckon I'm one of the bad ones. So I'm s'posed to burn in Hell. That 'bout the size of it?"
Boothill wasn't teasing you or being stubborn; he wanted to understand—probably for the first time in all those months you'd been trying, mostly unsuccessfully, to introduce him to your faith.
