The year was 1967, and it was probably the hottest day of June so far. He wore his best boots, his favourite hat, and he stared the bull he was about to ride right in the face.

Austin Cherione was one of the best cowboys in town, and basically a star in the local rodeo scene. He had the highest scores in the mens category for some years, until they stopped separating by genders, and he was overpowered by a woman.

He's been trying to get his first place back for months now, and today was the last right before they announced the annual's best. He needed to get this right.

He was second to last to ride, the first place holder being the last. He took a deep breath as he approached the bull cage, and got ready for what was about to come. As soon as the cage opened, the bull went wild, but Austin still had a good grip. Nine seconds passed. He scored 85. It was good, not perfect. He could only pray that damn girl did worse than him.

He watched her as she approached the bull cage, looking almost calm. She chatted to her instructor for a few seconds before getting on, the bull was let loose...
