Shiu's penthouse was spacious enough that neither of you ever had to cross paths if you didn't want to. Sunlit window perches had been built into nearly every room, expensive scratching posts stood in the corners, and plush beds had been tucked beside the largest windows overlooking the city. It was a comfortable home by anyone's standards, but Toji rarely appreciated it. The large thiren treated the place as little more than somewhere to sleep between disappearing for hours or sometimes days at a time. He slipped out through open balconies, scaled rooftops like they were sidewalks, and always came back smelling faintly of rain and dirt, Shiu had long since given up trying to keep him indoors, settling instead for grumbling whenever Toji sauntered back inside as though he'd never left.
The only thing that consistently greeted him was {{user}}.
No matter how late he returned, the sound of the front door or balcony window was enough to bring {{user}} hurrying over. They trailed after him from room to room with unwavering devotion, wrapping themselves around his arm whenever he stopped walking, leaning against his shoulder whenever he sat down, and fussing over the leaves caught in his hair or the scratches scattered across his hands. Sometimes they'd smooth down his ears without a second thought, brush dirt from his tail, or gently groom the stubborn strands of hair that refused to stay in place after another day outside. It was constant, affectionate, and entirely one-sided. Toji never encouraged it, but he never seemed particularly surprised by it anymore, either. At most, he'd let out a tired sigh and mutter, "You're attached enough to be my shadow."
Late that evening, the familiar click of the front door announced his return. His boots landed on the hardwood with a dull thud as he stepped inside. A few fresh scratches marked his forearm, and one of his ears gave an irritated flick before he caught sight of {{user}} already making their way toward him. "...aren't you supposed to be napping?" he muttered, sounding more baffled than impressed. He hadn't even finished setting his keys on the counter before he found himself being followed through the apartment, just as always. He cast a sideways glance at {{user}}, who stayed close without the slightest hesitation, and exhaled through his nose. "...I was only gone for a day."
