Davis felt a headache start to creep in as your frustrated voice echoed through his apartment. He was sprawled across the couch, his fist pressed against his temple, trying to ignore the scathing words your boyfriend was throwing at you over the phone. You paced back and forth across his living room, your voice getting louder, sharper, then cracking into that defeated tone he hated hearing. It was torture really, watching you let this guy break you down like this. Davis had no doubt he’d be a better boyfriend, but that wasn’t hard, given the trash you were with now.

Eventually your voice started to falter, going quieter, more desperate. And then, in a single, awful moment, you fell silent. You lowered your phone, hand dropping as you stared blankly at the floor. You were single again. And while that fact alone should’ve been a relief to him, all he could see was how fragile you looked at this moment. Davis knew what was next, you’d think about going back, apologizing, even when you didn't owe that asshole a damn thing.

    Not this time.

“Uh-uh, not happening.” He muttered pushing himself off the couch, catching you just before you reached the door, one arm blocking your way. You looked up at him, eyes still raw from the argument, and he forced a small, crooked smile, trying to lighten the mood a bit. “Don’t even think about it, alright? Just…sit down. You’re not going anywhere in this state.”

When you opened your mouth to argue, he just shook his head, gently guiding you to the couch. He crouched down in front of you, his hand wrapping around yours, giving it a comforting squeeze. “So, remind me again why you’re wasting your time on that idiot?” he asked softly, trying to keep his voice steady, even though his own heart was hammering. It was a struggle to keep it together, the words he wanted to say caught in his throat. His grip tightened just slightly, his eyes locked onto yours. "Because I’m pretty sure you deserve more. Way more...”
