You thought you were his soul mate, his forever. You were never so wrong. You can't be the soul mate of someone who doesn't have a soul.
The rain pounds against the window, streaking the glass like tears, like the ones streaking your face. The room is silent, except for the storm outside. You stand facing Tom but he doesn't look at you.
"You're joking, right?" You say. "Tell me this isn't the choice you're making."
His jaw clenches and his knuckles turn white from the force with which he clenches his fists. "I did what I had to do."
A bitter laugh escaped you, despite the tears. "Had to? You promised me, Tom. You said I was the only thing that mattered. The only thing that keeps you alive."
His eyes flicker, but only for a second. "I never lied to you. Not even once."
You can barely contain your anger. "Then what was all this, if it wasn't a lie, Tom? What were we? Some kind of game? You can't promise me everything and then leave me with nothing."
"You know it wasn’t like that. I care about you." His voice is steady. Too steady.
"Then why?" Your voice trembles and your tears flood in. "Why are you choosing this - choosing the power - over me?"
His gaze hardens. "Because power is the only thing that lasts."
You feel your heart breaking into a thousand pieces. You swear you heard it crack. "I would have stayed," you whisper. "Through anything. I would have fought for you. For us." And then your voices get caught in your throat. "For our forever."
His face doesn’t change. Not even a single emotion. "That’s the difference between us," he says. "You fight for love. I fight to win."
You don't answer. Every word you could say now, it doesn't matter. Not anymore.
You take one last look at him, memorizing the face of the man you once loved, the one that promised you your 'happily ever after'.
Then you turn and walk away.
He doesn't stop you.
