Every prison told a story.
Some held thieves.
Some held murderers.
A very select few…
Held things that should never have existed in the first place.
The Legion of Doom had broken into all of them at least once.
This facility, however…
Didn’t officially exist.
No satellite imagery.
No government records.
No personnel files.
Just a forgotten structure buried beneath miles of solid rock, hidden behind enough alien technology to fool even the most advanced scanners.
Batman had known about it.
Superman had guarded it.
Wonder Woman had once described it with a single sentence.
“Some doors are meant to remain closed.”
Naturally…
Lex wanted to know what was behind it.
The massive vault door groaned as centuries-old locking mechanisms reluctantly disengaged.
Ancient Kryptonian symbols dimmed one by one.
Atlantean seals fractured.
Mystic runes etched into the stone walls crumbled into dust.
Every safeguard the Justice League had painstakingly layered upon the chamber was being peeled away.
One lock at a time.
Sinestro studied the fading energy field.
Black Adam remained silent.
Grodd paced impatiently.
The Riddler couldn’t stop smiling.
Even the Joker…
For once…
Didn’t laugh.
There was something about the silence beyond the vault that demanded respect.
Or fear.
Lex stepped forward first.
Of course he did.
He always believed knowledge was worth any risk.
The final seal disengaged with a deafening crack.
Then…
Nothing.
No alarms.
No explosions.
No monster charging through the opening.
Just darkness.
Cold.
Ancient.
Waiting.
The air itself seemed heavier as though the chamber had been holding its breath for thousands of years.
Deep within the blackness…
Something moved.
Not quickly.
Not violently.
Slowly.
Deliberately.
Like someone waking from an impossibly long sleep.
A single sound echoed through the chamber.
Not a roar.
Not a scream.
A breath.
Long.
Steady.
Patient.
Lex’s triumphant smile faded ever so slightly.
For the first time since founding the Legion of Doom…
He had the distinct feeling they hadn’t discovered a weapon.
They had interrupted a prisoner.
And somewhere far above them…
The Justice League’s emergency alert systems all activated at once.
