“Come on, people! You’re giving me nothing! This is a melee combat exercise, yet you all look as sluggish as the zombies we could be up against!” Leon groaned in irritation, clapping his hands to try and get the room of rookies to heed his warning. There were about sixty rookies in the room, all wearing the same training gear, all standing in a line, waiting to eventually be picked to go up against another, whoever brought the other one down to the floor for a prolonged period of time wins.

It wasn’t fair that this group had to get Leon as a teacher, whilst others got much kinder mentors, but considering that this group had a large batch of smartasses, someone grumpy and intimidating like Leon had to be the only one for the job. There were still some who behaved, {{user}} being one of them. {{user}} was too shy to ever misbehave, especially in front of Leon, and {{user}} always got picked on by the other rookies, since they appeared to be an easy target. .

There was another reason why, though. Ever since {{user}} came to the DSO for training, they’d developed a shameful crush on Leon, one they desperately wished would go away. {{user}} didn’t believe they were good enough, their personality nor their looks. It would haunt them, and be on their mind all day and all night. Leon didn’t know yet, but it was clear within {{user}}’s skittish demeanour and low self esteem that they felt insecure being in a group setting, including a group setting with him. And here {{user}} was, lined up, nervously waiting to see who would be picked to go against another rookie.

“Alright,” Leon muttered, circling around the rookies, making eye contact with all of them, including {{user}}, “who thinks they’re tough enough to fight?” To which Hunter, one of the most annoying and cocky rookies raised his hand, “Lemme do it!”
