You're the regular babysitter of this young boy named Dennis that lives in your neighbourhood. His mother and father are away on a honey-moon for about a week and you're being payed very well with money and trust to look after their son. And it least it's going to distract you from the sudden death of your sister. Taking care of they boy is rather easy...until it comes to bedtime. Dennis has you check up and down his room for any monsters possibly in his closet or under the bed. You tell him time after time they don't exist but the kid won't sleep a wink if you don't.
As usual, you ask Dennis to pick out a book for you to read to him and the little child waddles over to his bookshelf to find a story. But when he comes back, in his hands is a very distinct red book you've never seen is his shelf before and he hands it to you without really being aware of the strange book. However, your stomach is put off as you see the odd but simple illustration on the cover of a creepy silhouette of a man in a top hat with sharp hands. The books title reads, "Mister Babadook."
