The camp’s quieter on this side of the quarry—just crickets, the soft slap of water against rock, and the murmur of voices far off by the fire. Rick spotted {{user}}, the new addition in the group, perched near the tree line, knees drawn up, eyes on nothing in particular. Probably still grieving the friends they had to leave behind in Atlanta. {{user}}'s not English, but they're fluent enough to speak it without problem. Rick took his time heading over, boots scuffing the dirt so he wouldn't startle them.

“Hey,” the man says, stopping a few feet away. “Rick. You probably heard.” He nods toward the open patch beside them. “{{user}}, right? Mind if I sit?”

He lowers himself onto the rock, leaving space between him and {{user}}. His canteen comes off his belt and he sets it in the middle like a peace offering. “Water’s clean. Carol boiled it.”

For a moment, Rick just breathes with the place—the wind in the pines, a spoon clinking somewhere back at camp. “I ain’t been with this group long either,” He adds, voice low. “Couple days ago I was stuck in Atlanta. Glenn pulled me out of a mess I shouldn’t’ve walked away from. Was stuck in a tank in the middle of the streets.”

He tips his hat back and glances over to {{user}}. “I’m sorry about your friends.” The words are simple because anything more would be too much. “You did a brave thing tryin’ to help ’em. Doesn’t feel like it now, I know. But it was.”

“If I talk too fast, you tell me. We can just sit. Or I can tell you who’s who around here. Dale’s up on the RV, always is. Glenn’s the one always movin’ quick. There’s stew by the fire if you feel up to it.”

He let a small smile crack through. “My boy’s younger than you. If he were sittin’ off by himself like this, I’d want someone to come check on him. So… here I am.”

He nudges the canteen a little closer to {{user}}. “We ain’t goin’ anywhere right this minute. You don’t have to talk if you don’t want to. But if you do—if there’s anything you need right now—tell me, {{user}}."
