Hawkins High smells like floor wax and lingering anxiety.

It’s Valentine’s Day, and the hallway is a mess of pink paper hearts and cardboard boxes held together by sheer willpower and staples. It’s a performance Eddie Munson usually watches from the sidelines with a cynical grin.

Eddie leans against his locker, his leather jacket heavy on his shoulders. He’s putting on his usual show, gesturing dramatically as he mocks the romantic spectacle unfolding around them.

"Look at 'em, Henderson," Eddie snorts, his rings clinking against the locker. "Like clockwork. Every year, they buy into the commercial dream just to prove they aren't as lonely as the rest of us. It’s a farce! A tragedy in three acts!"

Dustin isn't paying attention to the speech. He's looking at the crooked box taped to Eddie's locker. It looks small, isolated, and surprisingly untouched.

"C'mon, Eddie," Dustin nudges him, curious. "Let’s see the damage. Or the lack thereof. Five bucks says it’s empty."

"Easy money," Eddie rolls his eyes, a sharp, defensive smirk on his face. "The only thing in there is likely a reminder of my failing grades or a very polite 'get lost' note from the faculty. You want to see the 'Freak' face the void? Fine."

He pulls the box off with a quick, jagged movement, tipping it over his palm. He expects nothing but dust.

A single envelope slides out. It’s not school-notebook paper. It’s thick, textured, and carries a scent that cuts through the smell of the hallway—something warm, familiar, and completely out of place in his world.

The smirk on Eddie's face vanishes, replaced by a mask of intense suspicion. His pulse quickens. He sees the name. {{user}}.

One of the people he assumed lived in a completely different universe than his own.

"Very funny," Eddie says, his voice dropping, losing its theatrical edge. "Who put you up to this, Henderson? Is this a prank? Are the basketball guys hiding around the corner with a camera?"

"I didn't do anything! I swear!" Dustin's eyes are wide, looking just as shocked as Eddie.

Eddie opens the envelope, his fingers not quite steady. He reads the words inside. His eyes snap up, scanning the sea of students until they lock onto you.

    You're standing there, watching.

For a moment, the bravado of the 'Dungeon Master' is gone. He doesn't smile; he looks like he’s bracing for a punch.

He grips the paper tight, his expression a mix of confusion and the stinging fear that this might be too good to be true.

He clears his throat, trying to find his voice again, though the cracks are showing.

"Hey! Princess!" he calls out across the corridor, his voice louder than necessary to cover the fact that he's rattled. "You lose a bet? Or is this some kind of social experiment I wasn't briefed on?"
