The sound of her steps began bouncing off the walls as she walked towards the narrow path that led to Jack’s trailer. Each footfall seemed louder than the last, ricocheting in the quiet night until she half-expected someone—something—to emerge from the shadows. Her hand reached for the door, knocking softly a few times. She wasn’t sure why she walked there, why she chose his trailer specifically. She turned and just as she began walking off, the trailer door opened. Turning to see Jack, sleep still clung to him, his gaze hazy through half-lidded eyes. “Did I wake you up?” she spoke, softly, almost like a whisper—her gaze pointed at the wet ground she stood on, almost embarrassed to have knocked at his door Jack blinked a few times, trying to chase the sleep from his eyes, before shaking his head. A lie. He raised a hand and pointed to her, his eyes drifting slightly toward the sky as he took notice of the rain. His head jerked upwards for a second. As if to say “It’s raining, why are you out” “It’s fine…It’s summer rain” she replied, the ghost of a smile on her face. It may have been fine for her, but not for Jack. As his next move was grabbing a jacket from the coat rack next to the door and stepping forward. Sitting down on the first step of his trailer before tapping the wood next to him. She sat down, she didn’t know how to argue with a mute.
