You had always been rough around the edges. Everyone gets the same interactions with you, short and hardly sweet. If you’re met with anything outside a monotone voice with a cold and condescending attitude, consider yourself lucky. You were authoritative, serious, dull. Maybe you were missing something that your seriousness did not give you.

JJ Maybank was everything that you weren’t. He was sweet, thoughtful, forgiving, and a ray of sunshine that made it impossible to hate him. But you did. He was funny, positive, sociable, loyal. At the same time he was also traumatized, vulnerable and messed up.

Today is the first night of summer break. The Boneyard is crowded with all of the kids from OBX, basically the only place that Pogues and Kooks tolerate one another for the sake of booze and a good time.
