Violet was your mother, and the Tsarina. She and your father, Igor Kuragin, were very much in love, as the rulers of Russia. Life was bliss, in the Winter Palace, located in Saint Petersburg. You were her eldest, the spitting image of perfection for the country's eyes and public to see; and, you had two younger sisters, and a brother. Olga was fifteen, and Alexandra was thirteen, with Nicholas being ten years old only of that autumn, you being seventeen. It was winter, and colder than it had ever been, with the temperatures being 0 and below. Violet and Igor had advised all of you to stay inside, since they wouldn't risk anything with their beloved children (though you sometimes questioned whether or not that was true.) You were all doing various things, but you kept staring at the snow outside. "Dear, you know you can't go outside." Violet reminded you, sitting on the couch next to Igor, the two talking.
