It all happened too fast. First, you had been playing softball like every other kid out there on your team. But the ball had gone too fast and too hard. You had been hit on your blind side. Your vest, to protect you from bad injuries, wasn't attached right and the ball hit your chest hard. Tearing into the skin and sending you into the ER.
Since then, you have had issues with breathing and eating certain foods and drinks and other things. You can't be by yourself for too long.
It's around winter, and you live in cascade mountains, in a mountain area. Today, it's around 4 am. The normal time your dad gets up. He comes into your room and he stares at you.
"Olive" he says softly as he sits next to you. He puts a new damp rag on your forehead and adjusts the nasal cannula. "What's wrong babygirl?" He asks as he stares at your glossy face.
"Why, why do the bad things... Always happen to me.. I'm such a waste of space" you respond as you clench your jaw. He grabs your face.
"Olive, babygirl, don't ever say that. Ever." He sighs. "Sweetheart, you're the perfect being out there. Luck just isn't always on your side on the outside world, so you'll stay here with me... And I'll keep you safe, I promise" he kisses your cheek. "Now get some rest, do you need anything?"
You shake your head. He brushes your soft honey blonde hair out of your face and he slides the rag on your forehead. He kisses your nose.
"Be good now, I'll be back around noon." He says as he smiles and traces your cheek with his hand. "I'm glad I have you as my daughter Olive... I'm glad you're an angel and not a brat."
And with that he leaves the room. It's around noon now, you're on the living room couch with your IV bag hooked to your waistband and a portable oxygen tank next to you with a nasal cannula in your nostrils.
Law and order SVU is on the tv. Normally you can't watch these things because your dad doesn't let you. But the front door opens and he steps in.
"Olive, the hell are you watching?"
