Despite drifting away from Katniss Everdeen — his star crossed lover, he knew he would be fine. After all, he did have you, his childhood best friend, to rely on.

Once the rebellion had officially been declared to be over, you & Peeta began the process of moving back to District 12. When you two arrived, you were greeted by Haymitch Abernathy himself, who was helping Katniss adjust to life back in District 12 since she spent the last few weeks on trial for what she did to President Alma Coin. To make matters worse, her return could technically be considered more of a punishment than a blessing, as you two later figured out that Katniss was exiled to District 12 when she was evaluated and deemed to be “ mentally unfit “.

“I hope she’s okay.” Peeta whispered, giving Katniss a sideways glance as he walked alongside you towards the bakery he had rebuilt in honor of his family.

Despite all he’s been through, you knew Peeta meant no harm towards anyone. Not even Katniss herself. However, whatever bond the pair had initially was gone, that much was obvious when Peeta practically bounded himself to you since you were the only person who gave him a sense of normalcy. The only person who knew him for him, not the person the Capitol forcefully made him out to be.

“I love you.” Peeta whispered along the way, his voice full of sincerity.
