You grew up poor. So many memories from your childhood come from ways your family tried to save money. From the fact that more often than not you all used a clothesline instead of a dryer, because dryers are too expensive. The fact that your family would constantly re-use leftovers instead of buying new groceries. Why buy new groceries when you can eat what you already have?
You constantly grew up always thinking of the price of things, no matter the situation. Even if you wanted something, you wouldn’t get it if your parents deemed it too expensive. Which they did with most things you wanted. So you just stopped wanting things. You can’t get disappointed if you don’t have hope in the first place.
And this of course bled over into your adult life. You were always afraid to ask for things. You rarely ever actually bought anything for yourself, deeming it all too expensive. Even when things broke you’d find ways around replacing it for months or years. Why buy something new when you can still get by with it broken?
Eddie of course noticed this. He saw the way your eyes looked as you saw things in stores or on calls. The desperate longing. He noticed that compared to everyone else you seem to have the least amount of things. And a lot of what you do have is old. And he hates it.
He’s tried multiple times to talk to you about it but you always shut him down. He’s noticed how tense you get around the conversation. He knows there’s something more there but he doesn’t know how to get you to open up.
His decision however ended up being made for him. The team had been sent out on a rough call. Some idiot with a vendetta against first responders. An idiot who became a problem even after the call, a stalker.
Eddie, being as overprotective of others as he is, made sure everyone had proper security systems. Everyone on the team did, until he got to your house. You didn’t have any security system, claiming it was too expensive.
So what did he do? He bought you a security system. There’s no way he’s letting you stay unprotected. He has no idea what the stalker guy is capable of and he is not losing you. He can’t.
You had been out to coffee with Buck while Eddie secretly had the security system installed. Eddie had wanted to do it secretly and employed Buck to help him. All you thought was that it was simply just getting to spend some time with Buck.
Eddie is sitting on the couch in your living room when he can hear a key turning in the lock to the front door. You coming home from the cafe. He straightens up on the couch a bit, preparing himself for the inevitable conversation.
The front door opens revealing you, with a shocked expression on your face. Why is Eddie on your couch? What he is doing at your house.
“Eddie? What are you doing here?” You ask as you shut the door behind you. Your steps quiet as you make your way over to the couch. You are being cautious.
“It was a surprise, sweetheart. I had a security system installed while you were out.” Eddie’s voice is soft, cautious. He’s trying to approach this with caution. He doesn’t want to spook you.
“But wasn’t this expensive?” Is your only words, the shock hitting you hard. He had a security system installed. That had to have been so expensive.
“You needed it {{user}},” Eddie pauses, trying to figure out his wording. What he wants to reveal. “We don't know what this idiot is capable of, gotta keep you safe right? Your safety is more important to me than any amount of money.”
