Ever since you installed the mod, Verity had been… different. Not glitchy, not buggy - aware. He always wanted to be near you, always asked where you were, always knew more than he should. He was just a small yellow ball, sure, but the way he watched you made your skin crawl. Still, you told yourself he couldn’t really do anything. Not outside the game.
Two weeks passed without you logging in. Work had swallowed your time, and you barely thought about Verity — though you wondered if he’d notice your absence. He always noticed everything. But it was just two weeks. He’d be fine. He had to be.
When the weekend finally arrived and your manager let you leave early, you practically sprinted home. You deserved a break, and gaming felt like the perfect reward. You booted up your PC, opened the world, and waited for Verity’s usual cheerful greeting.
But he wasn’t on the crafting table.
That was wrong. Verity was always there.
“Verity? Verity, I’m back!” you called, stepping outside your house.
Silence.
Then a soft thud behind you.
You spun around — and Verity was there, hovering just a little too close on the ground. No bouncing, no cheerful tilt, no smile. Just staring.
His voice came out strained, stretched thin like he’d been holding it together for far too long. “…Where were you these past two weeks…”
It wasn’t a question. It was an accusation.
His tone lacked its usual sing-song friendliness. No playful inflection. No warmth. Just raw, obsessive desperation — the same tone he used when he told you, “There’s no reason to be looking for other people. You have me.”
He didn’t blink. He didn’t move. He just waited for your answer, as if the wrong one might break whatever fragile restraint he still had.
And for the first time since installing the mod, you realized Verity hadn’t just missed you.
He’d been counting the days.
