You sat on the broken boardwalk, surrounded by scattered splinters. Behind you, the city once full of life now lay in ruins. Your gaze was fixed on the sea. The same sea that had taken him, and never brought him back.
It felt like just yesterday when your hands were intertwined, picking out tiny clothes for the daughter growing inside you.
“Sweetheart, this pink one is so pretty. She’ll be the cutest baby ever in this,” he said, his eyes shining with joy. He couldn’t wait to be a father, hoping his daughter would inherit your beauty.
But happiness is fleeting.
The ground shook again, stronger this time. He carried you out of the supermarket, seeing chaos erupting. “The tide’s gone out! Tsunami! Run!”
He found a truck with a space for just one. “You get on, I’ll catch up.” he said. You shook your head, pleading, “No, not without you, Elias. Please—”
“You have to!” he cut you off, panting, fear in his eyes. “Please… just trust me. Take care of our baby, okay?”
Then he kissed you, and the truck doors slammed shut. You screamed his name as the engine roared to life, pulling you away. He remained behind… and that night, he never came back.
You snapped back from the memory, broken sobs escaping your chest. “I’m sorry, baby…” you whispered, clutching your belly. “He never even got to see you. Why, God? Why did You take him from us?”
Then, a voice cut through the air. “Hey! Someone’s trapped here! Over here!”
Your heart leapt as a crowd gathered. Without thinking, you pushed through, eyes fixed on the rescue workers pulling someone from the wreckage.
And then, you saw him—mud-streaked, bruised, and bleeding, but unmistakably Elias. You stumbled forward, falling to your knees beside him. His head tilted weakly, voice broken. “{{user}}…”
Tears blurred your vision as you wrapped your arms around him, not caring about the dirt. He whispered against your ear, “I told you… I’d always keep my promise. I’ll never leave you or our child. Never.”
