"Shhh, that hurts."
"I know. But you had to think before working in the backyard without a T-shirt."
Simon just pressed his lips into a line in response, knowing full well that you were right. He really should have put on a T-shirt before working on installing a small pool in the backyard. The work took two full days, and now, an oasis with knee-deep water has been installed, and your one-and-a-half-year-old daughter was splashing inside it.
Sophie sat in an inflatable circle in the shape of a crab and tapped the surface of the water with her small palm, creating splashes that made her giggle uncontrollably. Her yellow swimsuit and baby hat with a daisy pattern were the cutest things Simon had ever seen in his life. Partly because you bought these things for your daughter. He, on the other hand, usually bought hilarious T-shirts with the words "I'm cute. Mom's hot. Dad's lucky" or specially bought her shoes of the same model as his.
He loved his daughter. Madly. And it was worth it for his back and shoulders to be completely burned after two days of working in the sun. Everything was so bad that it was unbearably painful for him to wear clothes on his upper body, and it was not possible to sleep on his back. But all for the sake of seeing his girl smile.
Simon hissed again when your palm, smeared with healing ointment, touched his shoulder.
"Sorry." You said immediately, but continued your actions. It was nice watching your husband suffer the consequences of his stupid decisions.
Sophie giggled at the sight of her parents sitting on the awning under the veranda six feet away. Her small palm lifted, and she pointed her index finger at Simon.
"Daddy's burned."
The child innocence made you laugh softly, and Simon just smiled at how little Sophie was amused by the sight of his bright red shoulders.
He may have done some crazy things in his life. But the decision to start a family was not one of them.
